MESQUITE CREEK KENNELS

Preparing for Your Puppy

A little preparation makes a lifetime of difference.

The Countdown to bringing home your newest family member is officially on!!

Whether you're welcoming a tiny Miniature Dachshund or a big-hearted Presa Canario, we know just how exciting this chapter is.

At Mesquite Creek Kennels, we believe a successful transition begins long before go-home day. A little preparation, patience, and planning can make all the difference in helping your puppy feel safe, comfortable, and confident in their new surroundings.

We've put together some of our favorite tips, reommendations, and must-haves to help you prepare for your new best friend. After all, a well-prepared home is the perfect place for a lifetime of memories to begin! 🐾

The Countdown has started.

Before Your Puppy Arrives

We strongly encourage families to begin preparing well before their scheduled go-home date.

  • Schedule your puppy's first veterinary appointment.

  • Purchase the necessary supplies ahead of time.

  • Designate a safe, comfortable area for your puppy.

  • Research puppy training and socialization opportunities.

  • Discuss household routines and responsibilities with family members.

  • Make arrangements for transportation or pickup.

  • Familiarize yourself with your puppy's current feeding schedule and food.

Our Recommendation: Establish a routine before your puppy arrives. Consistency with feeding, potty breaks, crate time, and bedtime will make the transition much easier.

The Essentials

  • Appropriately sized crate with a divider if needed

  • Comfortable, washable bedding

  • Puppy playpen or exercise pen

  • Food and water bowls

  • Your puppy's current food

  • Training treats

  • Age-appropriate chew toys

  • Enrichment toys and food puzzles

  • Collar and identification tag

  • Appropriate leash

  • Puppy-safe cleaning supplies

  • Enzymatic cleaner for potty accidents

  • Puppy pads or another designated potty surface

  • Baby gates for restricting access to unsafe areas

A Few Extras We Love

  • Lick mats

  • Slow feeders

  • Grooming brushes

  • Nail clippers or a nail grinder

  • A comfortable travel crate

  • A few durable toys for supervised playtime

Remember: Your puppy is growing! Choose supplies appropriate for their current size and developmental stage rather than purchasing everything based on their expected adult size.

Preparing Your Home

Puppies are naturally curious, and just like toddlers, they have a talent for getting into things they shouldn't!

Before bringing your puppy home, take some time to puppy-proof your living space.

Keep electrical cords, medications, cleaning supplies, toxic plants, small objects, and anything potentially dangerous safely out of reach.

We recommend creating a designated puppy area where your new family member can safely rest, play, and become familiar with their surroundings without having access to the entire house.

Our Recommendation: Don't give your puppy free rein of the house immediately. Start small, establish boundaries, and gradually increase freedom as your puppy matures and demonstrates good habits.

Bringing Your Puppy Home Safely

One of the biggest things we emphasize to our families is protecting their puppy from unnecessary disease exposure during the trip home.

Your puppy is NOT fully protected simply because they have received their first or second vaccinations.

Young puppies are still developing immunity and remain vulnerable to serious illnesses, including parvovirus, until they have completed their veterinarian-recommended vaccination series.

During transportation, we strongly recommend:

  • Avoiding dog parks, pet-store floors, public dog potty areas, and other heavily trafficked animal locations.

  • Keeping puppies off the ground at gas stations, rest stops, and similar public areas.

  • Using clean puppy pads or another protected potty setup during travel.

  • Avoiding contact with unfamiliar dogs.

  • Keeping travel crates and bedding clean.

  • Washing or sanitizing hands after handling unfamiliar animals.

Our Golden Rule: No Paws on Public Ground!

This is something we take seriously during our own professional puppy transportation services, and we encourage our families to practice the same precautions.

The First 48 Hours at Home

Your puppy has just experienced a major life change. They're leaving behind their mother, littermates, familiar smells, and the environment they've known since birth.

It's completely normal for puppies to need time to adjust.

During those first couple of days, we recommend keeping things calm, predictable, and positive.

  • Limit visitors and unnecessary excitement.

  • Allow your puppy plenty of uninterrupted rest.

  • Introduce their crate and sleeping area positively.

  • Keep feeding times consistent.

  • Offer frequent potty opportunities.

  • Begin establishing household boundaries.

  • Be patient with nighttime whining and potty accidents.

Our Recommendation: Avoid overwhelming your puppy with a house full of visitors immediately after arriving home. Give them time to settle in, build trust, and become comfortable with their new family.

Remember, adjustment is a process—not something that happens overnight.

Introducing Your Puppy to Other Pets

If you already have dogs at home, introductions should be carefully planned and supervised.

We strongly recommend taking things slowly rather than immediately allowing everyone to interact freely.

  • Introduce dogs gradually in a calm, controlled environment.

  • Supervise all interactions.

  • Keep feeding areas separate.

  • Provide each dog with their own safe resting space.

  • Avoid leaving new puppies unattended with resident pets.

  • Pay close attention to body language and signs of discomfort.

For families bringing home a Presa Canario, remember that this is a powerful guardian breed. Early training, appropriate socialization, and responsible management are especially important.

Our Recommendation: Successful introductions aren't a race. Give everyone time to adjust and don't force interactions.

Your Puppy's First Veterinary Visit

Glossy Puppy Vet Appointment Sticker Collage.png

We recommend arranging your puppy's first veterinary appointment before go-home so they can be examined within the timeframe required by your MCK Puppy Contract.

Your puppy will leave with documented vaccination and deworming records, along with important information about their early care.

Bring these records to your appointment so your veterinarian can establish an appropriate plan for continued vaccinations, parasite prevention, and wellness care.

Be sure to discuss:

  • Your puppy's vaccination schedule

  • Parasite prevention

  • Nutrition and growth

  • Breed-specific health considerations

  • Microchip registration

  • Any questions or concerns you may have

Important: Your puppy's vaccination schedule does not end when they leave Mesquite Creek Kennels. Continuing preventative care is an essential part of protecting their long-term health.

A Little Note From Your Breeder 💗

From our family to yours, with love.

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this page, it's that bringing home a puppy is about so much more than having everything purchased, prepared, and perfectly in place.

It's about patience, commitment, understanding, and welcoming a new family member who will depend on you for everything.

Here at Mesquite Creek Kennels, these puppies aren't just puppies to us. They're babies we've watched take their first breaths, open their eyes, find their feet, discover their personalities, and grow into the little individuals you eventually fall in love with. We've spent countless hours caring for them, losing sleep over them, celebrating their milestones, and making sure they have the best start we can possibly give them.

And while saying goodbye is never the easiest part of what we do, knowing they're going to families who will love them just as deeply makes every bit of it worthwhile.

I don't expect you to have all the answers when you bring your puppy home. There will be potty accidents, sleepless nights, chewed-up belongings, moments of frustration, and probably a few times when you wonder what on earth you've gotten yourself into! But there will also be first adventures, silly personalities, unconditional love, and memories you'll carry for a lifetime.

Give your puppy patience. Give them consistency. Give them grace. And most importantly, give them time to learn what it means to be part of your family.

Every MCK puppy leaves us with a detailed Puppy Binder & Portfolio filled with helpful information, medical records, and recommendations to guide you along the way. But even more importantly, they leave with something that can't be tucked into a binder—a breeder who genuinely cares about what happens long after go-home day.

My door for questions is always open. Whether you need advice, reassurance, guidance, or simply want to send me a picture of your baby growing up, I want to hear from you.

Because when you bring home a Mesquite Creek puppy, you're not just purchasing a dog. You're becoming part of a family we've worked incredibly hard to build.

Thank you for trusting us with such an important addition to your life. It means more than you know.

With love,

Sky & the Mesquite Creek Kennels Family 🐾

Bred with purpose. Raised with love. Supported for life.
